MAIC-funded Jamieson Trauma Institute (JTI) showcases research enhancing Queensland’s trauma management

The Jamieson Trauma Institute (JTI) recently hosted their annual showcase event, bringing together key stakeholders at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital (RBWH) Education Centre.

The Motor Accident Insurance Commission (MAIC) is the main funder of JTI in partnership with Metro North Hospital and Health Service. MAIC representatives eagerly attended the showcase, including Acting Insurance Commissioner Gaenor Walker, to hear an update on the key JTI research initiatives aimed at enhancing trauma management across Queensland.

JTI Director, Professor Michael Schuetz, opened the event with the theme “Keep the focus – navigating complexity”, setting the stage for topics exploring the recovery journey after trauma and the challenges of delivering excellence in complex environments. 

Presentations included:

  • ‘Cost in focus: Unpacking the true burden of trauma’ by Ms Jacelle Warren
  • ‘The complexity of managing device-related infection’ from Dr Andrej Trampuz
  • ‘Psychological recovery after injury’ by Dr Dylan Flaws
  • 2025 MAIC-funded Trauma Fellow Dr Rebekah Young showcasing the launching of the Trauma Support Network at RBWH
  • Two guest speakers, Rosahlena Robinson and Fiona Murdoch, sharing powerful firsthand accounts of their trauma recovery, highlighting the realities of care, support and the complexity of the recovery journey.

The event highlighted how collaboration between researchers, clinicians, consumers and partners is essential to drive improvements across the trauma care system, while also identifying areas for improvement in the recovery journey.

With road trauma on the rise, the showcase reinforced MAIC’s important role in supporting JTI’s research, collaboration and innovation that drive meaningful improvements in trauma care and recovery.
