The annual Australasian Road Safety Research Conference was recently held in Sydney from October 26-29, attracting a record 355 submissions involving representatives from 32 countries and over 500 delegates.

The Motor Accident Insurance Commission (MAIC)-funded Road Safety Research Collaborations at the Queensland University of Technology, University of Sunshine Coast and Griffith University were well represented with more than 15 presentations across the Conference focusing on a range of issues including motorcycles, rear end crashes, speeding, drink and drug driving and driving around emergency vehicles.

As a reflection of the quality of research being undertaken through MAIC funding, two of the Griffith University presentations were the recipients of two highly coveted Conference awards.

Congratulations to Associate Professor Lyndel Bates and her team which included Dr Levi Anderson, from the University of Sunshine Coast on receiving the ‘Best Submission by a Road Safety Researcher’ award relating to the topic of ‘Incorporating Procedural Justice into Random Breath Testing: Effects on speeding’.

Congratulations also to Daniel Malone and co-authors from the MAIC-Griffith Road Safety Research Collaboration on receiving ‘Best Submission by a New Road Safety Researcher’ for their presentation relating to ‘Understanding Driver Responses to Emergency Vehicles’.

MAIC remains committed to and is proud of the impact that our funding to the Queensland Road Safety Research Collaborations continue to make in retaining and developing high-quality researchers in Queensland.

Quality research remains a cornerstone of our program, informing evidence-based improvements to road safety policy and practice that help reduce road trauma and the frequency of claims within Queensland’s Compulsory Third Party (CTP) scheme.
