New Griffith University and MAIC partnership to explore road safety in Queensland

Associate Professor, Darren Wishart from the Griffith University’s School of Applied Psychology will lead the new MAIC funded road safety collaboration.

The Motor Accident Insurance Commission (MAIC) and Griffith University and have announced a new partnership to explore road safety in Queensland. The MAIC Griffith University Road Safety Research Collaboration commenced on January 1 and will be led by School of Applied Psychology Associate Professor, Darren Wishart.

This Collaboration will focus on a number of key road safety issues including motorcycle and fleet safety, as well as vehicles as a workplace, including heavy vehicle transport and logistics, private vehicles used for work, taxis and rideshare, and motorhome hire and tourism.

Insurance Commissioner Neil Singleton expressed his excitement for the new Collaboration.

“MAIC’s funding for this new Griffith team formalises a fruitful relationship we’ve established with Associate Professor Wishart over many years,” Mr Singleton said.

“With road trauma unfortunately on the rise in Queensland, this Collaboration with its targeted focus on key issues like motorcycle safety, has an important role to play in identifying potential counter measures.

“In combination with MAIC’s existing relationships with QUT and University of Sunshine Coast,  this opens up opportunities for partnering and provides a further training ground for the next generation of road safety researchers in Queensland.”

Associate Professor Wishart said Griffith University was delighted to partner with MAIC on road safety research in Queensland.

“Through this Collaboration, we have been able to assemble a multi-disciplinary team, which can look at key road safety issues from a number of different perspectives,” Associate Professor Wishart said.

MAIC’s funding of the Collaboration will run for an initial three-year period. Further information is available at MAIC Griffith University Road Safety Research Collaboration
