Dr Verity Truelove receives Young Leader Oration Award

Congratulations to Dr Verity Truelove for receiving the Australasian College of Road Safety (ACRS) Young Leader Oration Award! This award recognises inspiring work and potential for future leadership in the field of road safety.

Road safety professionals and practitioners were recognised for their research, community engagement, and commitment to change at the ACRS Award Ceremony. The ceremony was held on Wednesday 20 September at the 2023 Australasian Road Safety Conference.

The conference, held in Cairns Queensland, featured over 20 presentations from MAIC-funded researchers across three days. This included researchers from the University of the Sunshine Coast (UniSC), Centre for Accident Research and Road Safety – Queensland, Jamieson Trauma Institute and the Road Safety Data Bureau.

The 2023 ACRS Young Leader Oration Award, sponsored by Transurban, was presented to Dr Verity Truelove in recognition of her active involvement in research, community engagement and early career mentorship for others working in road safety.

Dr Truelove is actively involved in research projects that address road rule compliance and behaviour change, with a focus on distracted driving, speeding and impaired driving. She has led the development of a formalised mentorship program for ACRS members and was invited to start the ACRS Early Career Network for ACRS members across Australasia.

Dr Truelove is senior research fellow at the Road Safety Research Collaboration, a strategic partnership between the Motor Accident Insurance Commission (MAIC) and UniSC. Since 2018, the Road Safety Research Collaboration has set out to understand and improve road safety in Queensland.

As regulator of compulsory third party (CTP) insurance in Queensland, MAIC is proud to support research to reduce the incidence and effects of road trauma. This underpins our approach to maintaining affordable CTP insurance premiums for motorists and to keeping our community safe on Queensland roads.

Congratulations to Dr Truelove and the other road safety practitioners recognised at the Australasian College of Road Safety Award Ceremony. Your important work striving for evidence-based road safety research and effective community engagement drives positive change for our communities, both locally and globally.
