To coincide with Queensland Road Safety Week, we recently hosted representatives from PCYC’s Braking the Cycle learner driver mentor program.  MAIC’s funding of this award-winning program commenced in 2017 and since this time has supported learner drivers without access to a supervisor or registered vehicle to complete their logbook hours. The aim of the program is to reduce unlicensed driving as well as enhancing increased employment opportunities, community connection and road safety education.

We heard firsthand from the volunteer driver mentors how rewarding their experience has been, as they not only teach invaluable safety skills and help to get logbook hours up but share meaningful conversations. Participants shared the difference the program has made in their lives, building confidence and opening career opportunities for themselves and their families.

MAIC’s funding to the PCYC Changing Gears program, the First Nations adaption of the Braking the Cycle program, expanded to two new sites, Yarrabah and Palm Island, in 2023-24. This is in addition to the existing site at Napranum. PCYC are continuing to develop and adjust this model on an ongoing basis to best support the much-needed enhancement of road safety education and training within these communities.

MAIC supports a range of initiatives that contribute to the ongoing viability and affordability of the Queensland CTP scheme by reducing claims frequency. We thank PCYC for their ongoing commitment to driver education and the prevention of road crashes.

Key statistics from the Braking the Cycle program from its inception in 2012 to end of June 2024 include:

  • 13m + kms driven
  • 317,730 driving hours
  • 5,606 licences
  • 714 volunteers
