Expert says Queensland’s bike helmet law critical for rider safety

Cyclists

Road safety expert, Professor Narelle Haworth, says Queensland’s bicycle helmet law is critical for rider safety.

“The current law is good road safety policy because it addresses a serious issue in a way that has been scientifically proven to be effective and can be feasibly implemented,” Professor Haworth explains.

Professor Haworth is a Director of the Centre for Accident Research and Road Safety – Queensland, based at the Queensland University of Technology.

She refers to Australian research indicating that helmets reduce the chance of head injury by 50 per cent; serious head injury by 69 per cent; and fatal head injury by 65 per cent.

Read five more reasons that Professor Haworth says our bicycle helmet law should remain unchanged.
