In Queensland, compulsory third party (CTP) insurance protects motor vehicle owners and drivers from being held financially responsible if they injure someone in a motor vehicle accident. It also enables a person who is injured wholly or partly due to the actions of another driver to access medical treatment and rehabilitation support as well as receiving fair and timely compensation. RACQ will continue to manage your CTP claim in line with their legislative obligations. RACQ will still manage claims for the period that they were the CTP insurer.
Motor vehicle owners who have purchased their CTP insurance from RACQ up to and including on 30 September 2023 will retain their policy with RACQ until the period they purchased it for is complete. After the policy period ends, the Department of Transport and Main Roads will reallocate the policy to another insurer. No action is required unless they wish to choose an alternate CTP insurer.
If you cause an accident and you have purchased an insurance policy with RACQ for the period in which you have the accident, RACQ insurance will respond to claims resulting from that accident.
RACQ will still manage claims for the period that they were the CTP insurer. You may lodge a CTP insurance claim with RACQ if you or your family were injured in a motor vehicle crash in Queensland that was the fault (completely or partly) of vehicle insured by RACQ.
You do not need to do anything unless you wish to choose a different CTP insurer. If you currently have CTP insurance with RACQ, you will remain insured with them until your vehicle registration and CTP insurance policy expire. After this date, you will be randomly reallocated to a different CTP insurer. Your new CTP insurer will be shown on the vehicle registration renewal notice from the Department of Transport and Main Roads.
If you do wish to change CTP insurers, you can nominate to switch insurer at any time on the Department of Transport and Main Roads website, over the phone on 13 23 80 or in person at a DTMR customer service centre. You must change insurer before you pay your registration renewal for it to apply for that period.

Yes, in 2013 MAIC worked collaboratively with NRMA and the Department of Transport and Main Roads to assist NRMA to successfully withdraw from the scheme on 1 January 2014. Other insurers which have left the scheme since MAIC was formed in 1994 include FAI in 2002 and Fortis Insurance in 1999.

If a motorist renewed their registration and CTP insurance policy for 12 months on 30 September 2023, that insurance policy will remain in force with RACQ until 30 September 2024.
