The Motor Accident Insurance Commission (MAIC) recently partnered with the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) to sponsor the 2025 Nudgeathon, hosted by the Queensland University of Technology (QUT). This innovative behavioural change competition brought together bright minds to tackle real-world social issues. One of the key challenge briefs, supported by MAIC, focused on helping young people better understand Compulsory Third Party (CTP) insurance and the critical importance of keeping their vehicle registration up to date.
What is Nudgeathon?
Nudgeathon is an annual competition that brings together undergraduate and postgraduate students, government employees, and private sector professionals from Australia, New Zealand, and beyond. Over two and a half days, participants use behavioural science principles, such as ‘Nudge Theory,’ to develop innovative solutions to pressing social issues. MAIC’s role in Nudgeathon 2025
Representing MAIC, Taylor Sankey and Matthew Waugh attended Nudgeathon 2025 as organisational clients. Matthew Waugh also served on the expert panel, engaging with teams and providing insights into MAIC’s challenge brief. The brief encouraged participants to explore creative ways to increase awareness of CTP insurance among young people, a demographic that often lacks knowledge about its importance.
Nudgeathon 2025 winners
The event kicked off with a series of inspiring talks from experts, including Dr Stephen Whyte and QUT’s Executive Dean, Professor Sharon Christensen. These sessions set the stage for collaboration and innovation, encouraging participants to think critically about behavioural challenges in road safety and transport policy.
On the final day, teams presented their solutions to a panel of judges. Three groups chose to tackle MAIC’s brief, offering practical and innovative ideas that MAIC will consider.
After three days of inspiring ideas, creative problem-solving, and future-focused thinking, the winners were:
🥇 Griffith University
🥈 University of Canberra
🥉 QUT Behavioural Economics Society (BESTies)
👏 People’s Choice Award went to University of New South Wales (which also selected MAIC’s brief).
MAIC congratulates all the teams who took part in this year’s Nudgeathon and extends its gratitude to QUT, TMR, and everyone who contributed to the event’s success. The 2025 Nudgeathon has been an inspiring showcase of how behavioural science can address real-world challenges. The insights gained will help MAIC continue its work to improve insurance literacy and promote road safety among young Australians.
